The story sounds compelling
but he never gets to it
In the style of “best sellers “ it digs deeper and deeper holes
of minutiae until there is no story.
The first 12 pages went into excruciating excessive detail
of his mother…

Good writing, but (apparently) one is to consider it as more of a work of fiction than a true memoir. Burroughs mentions his brother, but not by name - I strongly recommend reading John Elder Robison's books.

This is one of the best books Ive read in a long time. It is funny, heartbreaking, and full of hope. Augusten is an amazing person and this book gives hope to abuse survivors too, Awesome read.

Amazing and admirable how Augusten can have such a lovely sense of humour throughout it all. Allowing us to laugh with him as he comes to grips with his upbringing. Humour truly is a sign of deep intelligence.

By far one of the best books I've read in awhile. Burroughs' wit and candor, while telling a tragic and crazy story, make this a must read.

I so get Augusten's humor. He makes a unbearable story funny. Laughing and crying are the same for many of us. Read this many years ago and i still can recall many instances in this book that I found funny.

I really didn't think this book was funny. I'm sticking with David Sedaris. I say that because I kept hearing them compared.
Perhaps it's because I've never been a drug user or alcoholic, but his stories seemed sad rather than funny.

I found it slightly amusing and sick at the same time. No one should have a childhood like this but since someone did, we might as well sensationalize it?
