I enjoyed this story, even though I was frustrated that she didn’t resist her ex’s encroachment harder, or tell his mother the truth about her not respecting her choices.
The trope of the grouchy, hunky detective who is gradually charmed by the protagonist is so well-worn, it’s threadbare! I can think of at least 5 series that use it. It still works, though.
It’s very disappointing that the library doesn’t have books 2-16 in inventory - that’s a huge gap in the history of these developing relationships.
Recommended anyway.I enjoyed this story, even though I was frustrated that she didn’t resist her ex’s encroachment harder, or tell his mother the truth about her not respecting her choices.

I strongly believe in starting any book series at the beginning, so I started with this book that said it’s the 1st. But just 1 chapter in, it was obvious I was missing huge amounts of history. Turns out there’s a previous series with the same characters, but unfortunately, the 1st dozen books in that series are only available as audiobooks, which I cannot stand.
So picture this: you’re new in town, and see 2 women chatting happily in the grocery store and ask “Excuse me, where’s the tomato paste?” They invite you to lunch, but spend the whole time laughing about private jokes and people you don’t know. Not nice, and not fun.
Well, that’s what coming into this series after 16 previous books is like.
As much as I adore chocolate (and cozy mysteries) I may have to abandon this author’s work entirely. I hate having to continually wonder what I missed previously.I strongly believe in starting any book series at the beginning, so I started with this book that said it’s the 1st. - She’d seen how cute the Chocolate Moose was and decided she wanted it for herself. And what Sarabelle wanted, Sarabelle usually got, mostly on account of her having a voice that could etch glass, the dumb persistence of a housefly bumping against a windowpane, and no shame whatsoever. This is no where near as depressing as the title suggests, and surprisingly entertaining, but it’s a hefty volume and a bit intense for the holidays, so I’ll pick it back up later.

Things are generally well explained & often demonstrated, but be warned - it relies heavily on algebra & trig. If you struggled in high school, be prepared to be lost a lot of the time when it goes into pure math mode. In fact, the professor recommends brushing up on your math 1st.
